Definition:

Developer-Centric Cloud Architecture Framework (DCAF) is an approach to designing cloud infrastructure that prioritizes developer experience, productivity, and autonomy. Unlike traditional infrastructure-first frameworks that focus on technical implementation details, DCAF abstracts away low-level cloud complexity and provides developers with simple, intuitive interfaces to provision and manage infrastructure using familiar concepts and workflows. It puts developer needs (speed, simplicity, self-service) at the center of cloud architecture decisions.

Key Concept:

  • Developer First: Optimize for developer productivity, not infrastructure complexity
  • Abstraction Layer: Hide cloud vendor specifics behind simple interfaces
  • Self-Service: Developers provision infrastructure without IT tickets
  • Familiar Tools: Use languages/tools developers already know (not just YAML)
  • Fast Iteration: Deploy infrastructure in minutes, not weeks

Example:

Building a Web Application

Developer-Centric Approach (DCAF)

// app.ts - Complete infrastructure in ~50 lines!

import { App } from '@dcaf/core';

// Initialize app
const app = new App('ecommerce-platform', {
  environment: 'production',
  region: 'us-east-1'
});

// 1. Database (PostgreSQL)
const database = app.addDatabase('postgres', {
  name: 'products-db',
  size: 'medium', // Maps to appropriate instance type
  storage: '100GB',         // Auto-grows to 500GB if needed
  backups: {
    enabled: true,
    retention: 7            // days
  },
  highAvailability: true    // Multi-AZ automatically
});

// 2. Cache (Redis)
const cache = app.addCache('redis', {
  name: 'session-cache',
  size: 'small',
  evictionPolicy: 'lru' // Least Recently Used
});

// 3. Storage (S3)
const imageStorage = app.addStorage('images', {
  public: false, // Private by default
  versioning: true,
  lifecycle: {
    moveToArchive: '90d', // Move to cheaper storage after 90 days
    deleteAfter: '365d'     // Delete after 1 year
  }
});

// 4. CDN
const cdn = app.addCDN({
  origin: imageStorage,
  caching: {
    defaultTTL: '1h',
    maxTTL: '24h'
  },
  compression: true,        // Gzip/Brotli automatically
  https: true // SSL certificate auto-provisioned
});

// 5. Email Service
const email = app.addEmail({
  fromDomain: 'ecommerce.com',
  verifyDomain: true, // SPF/DKIM setup automatically
  templates: './email-templates'
});

// 6. Background Jobs
const jobQueue = app.addQueue('orders', {
  workers: 3,               // Auto-scaling workers
  retries: 3,
  timeout: '5m'
});

// 7. Monitoring (automatic!)
// ✅ CloudWatch metrics auto-configured
// ✅ Log aggregation set up
// ✅ Alerting configured
// ✅ Dashboard created

// 8. CI/CD (automatic!)
// ✅ GitHub Actions workflow generated
// ✅ Staging environment created
// ✅ Production deployment configured

// Deploy!
app.deploy();

What Happened Behind the Scenes:

DCAF automatically:

1. Created VPC with best practices:
   ├─ Public/private subnets across 3 AZs
   ├─ NAT gateways for private subnet internet access
   ├─ Internet gateway for public access
   └─ Route tables configured

2. Set up security:
   ├─ Security groups with least privilege
   ├─ Database only accessible from app
   ├─ Encryption at rest (KMS keys created)
   ├─ Encryption in transit (SSL/TLS)
   └─ IAM roles with minimal permissions

3. Configured monitoring:
   ├─ CloudWatch metrics for all resources
   ├─ Log groups created
   ├─ Alarms for CPU, memory, errors
   ├─ SNS topics for notifications
   └─ Dashboard with key metrics

4. Set up high availability:
   ├─ Multi-AZ database
   ├─ Auto-scaling for workers
   ├─ Health checks
   └─ Automatic failover

5. Implemented best practices:
   ├─ Tagging strategy
   ├─ Cost allocation tags
   ├─ Backup schedules
   ├─ Update windows
   └─ Performance insights
Total Time: 10 minutes (5 min to write code, 5 min to deploy)
