Definition:

An Active Directory (AD) Password is the secret credential assigned to a user account in Microsoft’s Active Directory — a centralized system used by organizations to manage who can access computers, files, and network resources.

When you log into a work computer or company network, your AD password is what verifies your identity and determines what you’re allowed to access. It is stored securely as an encrypted hash (not plain text) on the domain controller — the server that manages the whole network.

💡 Think of it like a master key to your workplace — one password unlocks your computer, email, shared folders, and other company systems all at once.

Example:

Imagine you work at a company called Contoso Corp:

| Scenario | What Happens |
|----------|--------------|
| You type your password at login | AD checks if it matches the stored hash |
| Password is correct ✅ | You get access to your PC, email, and shared drives |
| Password is wrong ❌ | Access is denied; after 5 failed tries, your account may be locked |
| Your password expires | AD forces you to create a new one |
