Definition:

Accelerated Inference is the use of specialized hardware and optimization techniques to run AI model predictions much faster than standard (CPU-only) execution — by offloading the heavy matrix math of neural networks onto processors designed specifically for parallel computation. The goal is to minimize latency (time to produce a response) and maximize throughput (number of predictions per second).

At its core, inference (the model “running” to make a prediction) is mostly matrix multiplication — multiplying huge arrays of numbers billions of times. CPUs are great at sequential, varied tasks but have limited cores for parallel math. Accelerators (GPUs, TPUs, NPUs) have thousands of cores that do the same math simultaneously — making them dramatically faster for the parallel nature of neural networks.

THE MATH: A neural network does matrix multiplication.
Layer output = input × weights (billions of operations)
