Definition:
Homomorphic Encryption is a cryptographic technique that lets you perform computations on encrypted data WITHOUT decrypting it first — producing an encrypted result that, when decrypted, matches the result you would have gotten from computing on the original plaintext data.
It’s the “holy grail” of data privacy: it allows an untrusted party (like a cloud server) to process your sensitive data while never seeing the actual data — only its encrypted form. The server does useful work on your behalf, but learns nothing about your information in the process.
NORMAL ENCRYPTION vs. HOMOMORPHIC ENCRYPTION:
═══════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════
NORMAL ENCRYPTION (Must decrypt to compute):
──────────────────────────────────────────────────────────
┌──────────┐ encrypt ┌──────────┐ decrypt ┌──────────┐
│ Data │ ────────► │ Encrypted│ ────────► │ Data │
│ "salary" │ │ data │ │ "salary" │
└──────────┘ └────┬─────┘ └────┬─────┘
│ │
▼ ▼
┌───────────────┐ ┌───────────────┐
│ Cloud server │ │ COMPUTE: │
│ CANNOT work │ │ salary × 2 │
│ on this — │ │ (on plaintext)│
│ it's locked │ └───────────────┘
└───────────────┘
⚠️ To do the work, the server MUST
see the plaintext (a privacy risk)
HOMOMORPHIC ENCRYPTION (Compute on encrypted data):
──────────────────────────────────────────────────────────
┌──────────┐ encrypt ┌──────────┐ COMPUTE ┌────────────┐
│ Data │ ────────► │ Encrypted│ ────────► │ Encrypted │
│ "salary" │ │ data │ │ result │
└──────────┘ └────┬─────┘ └─────┬──────┘
│ │
▼ │
┌───────────────┐ │
│ Cloud server │ │
│ COMPUTES ON │ │
│ ENCRYPTED │ │
│ salary × 2 │ │
│ (never sees │ │
│ the number) │ │
└───────────────┘ │
▼ decrypt
┌───────────────┐
│ Result │
│ "salary × 2" │
│ (correct!) │
└───────────────┘
The server computed on the ENCRYPTED data and never saw
the plaintext. Only the owner can decrypt the result.

WITHOUT any hospital revealing its private patient records.
